To Promote and Protect Our Rights

In accordance with the rules and constitution of the Association, one of the objectives is to promote and protect the interests of its members and to liaise with agencies, trading houses, manufacturers, as well as with foreign importers and exporters for the advancement of trade for mutual benefit.  The association must also maintain cordial relationship with the officials of Government Departments in solving any problems faced by our members through friendly negotiations.

With this approach, the association has been able to resolve, on behalf of its members, all major problems pertaining to government laws, the most serious one was the labeling act, under this act, all spare parts must carry a price tag.  In view of the complicated nature of our trade, this would not be feasible.  Needless to say, this would greatly emburden our members. So on 5th January 1975, our association's presentatives consisting of the late Ong Ah Chan and Tan Yew Teong, together with Goh Swee Joo and Kong Kim Hoh, led by our Honorary Advisor at that time, Dr. Tan Teong Hong, held a dialogue with Enforcement Officers of the Ministry of Trade and Industry to explained our difficulties in implementing the labeling act. When the second Chairman took office in 1976 the Association continued its series of dialogue with all the authorities concerned and after two years of friendly negotiations we submitted a memorandum with our proposal that only 22 types of spare parts that were commonly used by consumers then be required to be labeled with prices. The Ministry of Trade and Industry, after having studied our proposal thoroughly, finally made an official announcement to the effect in June 1997.

In 1980 the government came out with a new price control act which required all pre-packed goods to carry the names and addresses of the manufacturer, importer, producer or wholesaler, the importer must also state the country of origin,. As we have already mentioned about the complicated nature of our trade, the implementations of this act will give rise to great confusion and increase operating cost.

The Association carried out another round of dialogues with relevant officers from the Ministry of Trade and Industry explaining our specific predicament and that it was "mission impossible" to comply fully with all the requisites of the act. It was fortunate that our plea had not fallen on "deaf ears" and that the authority finally agreed that our members should try to comply with law as far as possible to avoid being penalized for minor technical short-comings.

Over the years the association has continuously called upon the government to reduce and restrict the types and models of locally assembled vehicles to ensure an orderly development of the automotive spare parts industry and to enlighten our capital investment.
